Sauna Open Air 2013 Tampere Ratina Stadium

It is about time to open the festival season! And is there a better way to start it than to head North to the land of never ending festivals – Finland? I think not. With that said, I've decided to head for Sauna Open Air in Tampere which took place between 8th and 9th of June.

I've been to couple of finnish festivals before including this biggest one which is obviously Tuska. Compared to which Sauna could be called slightly humble. Furthermore, even though there were merely two stages, I felt equally tired because I had to run between them all the time, cause the schedule was THAT squeezed. But hey, being both tired as a pony after a western and sun-burned are two inseparable festival features that are awaiting for us and we know it well! And we are still willing to participate. But enough of my babble. Without no further ado, let's get get going!

Day 1

Finnish summer arrived pretty early this year and sun blessed all Sauna participants with intense heat. I've arrived at Ratina stadium pretty early to get myself a pass and explore the Sauna area.

Festival for me started with Egokills performance. They're a young hard rock/heavy metal band from Tampere with a fresh vibe and hippie looks which made them pretty pleasant to watch. I'd love to see those dudes in a smaller venue someday. I guess it would work for their advantage more than a festival stage.

After listening to a few songs, I've climbed back to the stadium pitch to see Staratovarius. I've never been a big fan of their music- even during my power metal stage couple of years ago. Namely, I know a few songs heard here and there, but I never felt like I need to know more of their music. Anyway, they're clearly a big deal here, judging from the amount of devoted fans that showed up at the Radio Rock Stage. Apart from incredible voice, Timo Kotipelto gains a lot of credit from really good contact with the audience. But I'd rather add my freshly gained Stratovarius experience a “pleasant, but so what?” label.

Sauna Open Air 2013 Tampere Ratina Stadium Bloodred Hourglass

Right after that I got back to Inferno Stage where another band, Bloodred Hourglass, started to set up. Soon they've begun and... Oh boy, this was it! Their blend of aggressive thrash death metal blend hit my taste like ladies knee into a man's crotch. Their performance was busting with energy, despite the fact that they had to perform in full sun. It's a pity that the attendance on Bloodred Hourglass was rather moderate, since it was such a great act.

Sauna Open Air 2013 Tampere Ratina Stadium Children Of BodomMy personal feelings towards succeeding band which showed up right after Bloodred Hourglass are somewhat mixed. I never understood the phenomenon of Children Of Bodom, since their music made me more annoyed than cheerful. But duty's a duty, so I obediently moved to the pit. Call me biased, but I found their show disappointing and payed more attention to what was happening in first rows than to the stage. Well, band did what they are supposed to do and that would be it. No fireworks in particular.

Sauna Open Air 2013 Tampere Ratina Stadium Lost SocietyUnlike Children Of Bodom, next band stole my heart and soul in an estimated time of 15 seconds. You say thrash is dead? So be prepared, because Lost Society will turn all your arguments invalid! Those peeps were promoting their latest album “Fast Loud Death” and they've already got a deal with colossus, which is Nuclear Blast. Quartet from Jyväskylä showed the pure quintessence of thrash metal gigs – it was fast, furious and neck-crashing. To quote a classic: “That was brutal”. Band members also came up with a damn original scenography. Who would have thought that one can come up with a giant hairy plastic woman's genitals to cover a smoke generator?

Sauna Open Air 2013 Tampere Ratina Stadium Opeth

Later on, atmosphere alternated to a slightly more delicate one, namely – Opeth. You can say everything about Mikael Åkerfeldt, but not that he has no balls. That man dared to mention about Swedish superiority in ice hockey on stage and the crowd reaction was pretty easy to predict – he got booed instantly. Music-wise though, their gig was a soothing performance, almost a relaxing one, a nice break after few hours of angry rampage.

Sauna Open Air 2013 Tampere Ratina Stadium Finntroll

Funny thing about the next artist is that every time I see them in full sun which doesn't do the best job in creating proper atmosphere. Common knowledge states that trolls turn into a stone in contact with daylight, but it luckily doesn't apply to Finntrolls (does this word has a plural form anyway...?). And thank gods, because a metalheads' life would be incomplete without this jolly band. I was looking forward to their performance after I acknowledged that they've pimped their image a bit. No disappointment here – with trollish ears they've looked awesome! At this point I should also mention that all props go to Vreth who performed in thick uniform in current temperature. Their show basically made the Inferno Stage area packed up with everybody rocking into the lively folk melodies. Cause, let's be honest, it's difficult not to swing a tiny bit while listening to them.

Sauna Open Air 2013 Tampere Ratina Stadium Nightwish

First day was closed by Nightwish. I was also looking forward to their show, since I badly wanted to see how is Floor doing as a new singer. My verdict is – ladies and gentlemen, we all can now go to Nightwish gigs and we don't have to worry that our ears might bleed after vocalist will start to sing! Finally! In a nutshell – Floor sings and looks like million dollars, feels onstage like a fishie in the sea and can make crowd go nuts in seconds. After first three songs I've decided to call it a day, cause basically I was melting like a snowman on spring and needed a rest.

Day 2

I have been waiting for this day with a bigger anticipation, hence many bands I was about to see for the first time performed on Sunday. Weather was slightly better than on Saturday – overcast gave participants necessary relief from heat.

Sauna Open Air 2013 Tampere Ratina Stadium Stam1na Kai-Pekka Kangasmäki After a brief glance at Ghost Voyage gig (doom metal is not exactly my cup of tea) I settled around Radio Rock stage waiting for Stam1na's show. I suspected that gig of Stam1na is going to be, uh, avant-garde. There were signs heralding it and with my hitherto knowledge of this band I should simply KNOW it. But when the guys entered on the stage in Hawaiian skirts and flashy flower wreaths, I couldn't help myself and was like “whaaat...?!”. But that's what I primarily love this band for – the most twisted sense of humour on the metal scene ever! Stam1na is a big deal here in Finland and whenever you'll have an opportunity to see them – do it at once. Apart from wicked humour they can also offer you a fine selection of fast and furious songs which will made you join the mosh pit immediately with setting you on fire as a bonus. Hyrde, Kaikka and Pexi ran on the stage like crazy, moshing for the entire gig. Seriously, these dudes have some kind of motors in their necks.

Next in line was Omnium Gatherum. Fellow photographer recommended them to me. I went there without bigger expectations, however, I never despise a piece of good melodic death metal. Especially the one with ingenious and catchy riffs combined with fine roar produced by the vocalist. I couldn't ask for more. Couldn't stay for the whole show though, because I had to make to Stam1na signing session as soon as possible in order to see Hardcore Superstar concert.

Sauna Open Air 2013 Tampere Ratina Stadium Hardcore SuperstarI got there nearly on time to discover that studio records of Hardcore Superstar are cool, but live versions are simply mind blowing! Jocke Berg dashed on stage like insane and at the same moment commanding the crowd which basically ate out of the palm of his hand. Heck, I even caught myself on singing along with the crowd. At certain point Jocke decided that they lack girls on stage and guess what? Two lucky ladies actually got there, were treated with a shot and got an opportunity to sing along during “Last Call For Alcohol” which was incredibly fun to watch. Honestly, I believe that it was my favourite show of the entire Sauna.

Onwards, to the band which name I can never spell properly and that's Crashdïet. I've never been some kind of a big sleaze or glam metal fan, but I do admit insane catchiness of their songs which end up stuck in your head for the rest of the day. They also have extremely devoted fans, because some of them were actually waiting from the afternoon (when the gates opened) in the first rows which is also worth mentioning.

Subsequently, Sabaton. Sheesh. I've saw them so many times that I don't even know what to write about them. It was the usual thing – it was like a jolt of electricity, Jocke sprinted on stage like a madman while Pär, Chris and Thobbe didn't fall much behind him. What surprised me was the actual setlist which focused on mainly on “Carolus Rex” with a very few additions from older records.

I skipped the last few songs so I could make it to Hatebreed show. I was slowly starting to feel a little bit feverish, but Americans made a good job so I could forget about my bad shape. Their shows are always like a kick in the jaw – compelling and making you focused on here and now which was in this case – heavy headbanging!

Sauna Open Air 2013 Tampere Ratina Stadium Volbeat

Closing act for Sauna was Volbeat. After a long, soothing intro the band finally showed up on stage, providing a set of incredibly catchy, groovy songs with a solid dose of humour. It was quite a surprise for me to see the newest Volbeat member who was no other than Rob Caggiano, former guitarist of Anthrax.
